UKBRC is a partner in a new UK-Canadian network sponsored by the Leverhulme Trust. This was officially launched at the Royal Society of Edinburgh in February 2013. The other UK partner is Heriot-Watt University (Prof. Raffaella Ocone, who leads the initiative). In Canada the partners are ICFAR at Western University, McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan.
The network seeks to work together to formalise biochar as a Negative Emission Technology. It will investigate the potential of biochar as a technically and economically effective method of storing carbon at the same time as increasing the adaptability of agriculture to climate change.
