The Scottish Biofuel Programme (SBP) was launched in November 2012. It brings together five academic institutions to provide Scottish companies with advice, support and solutions in the field of biofuels. Companies engaging with SBP may generate new revenue streams, reduce costs, meet environmental goals and cost-effectively comply with legislation.

The University of Edinburgh (through UKBRC) provides expertise to SBP concenring biochar specifically. Biochar production may integrate with one of more other of the other core technologies represented in SBP: biobutanol, bioethanol, micro- and macro- algae and anaerobic digestion.

The SBP is backed by the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund and aims to grow the biofuel sector and the wider economy.
