I am a Post Doctoral Researcher visiting UKBRC in partnership between the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE/CNPEM) and the University of Edinburgh, funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) (2016/13813-8 and 2018/09464-3).

The wider project concerns transforming residues from the sugarcane industry in Brazil into effective fertilisers. This involves using crop straw biomass as well as the by-products of 1st and 2nd generation ethanol production.

The current focus is to produce phosphorus- and potassium-rich biochars, enhanced for characteristics that will increase nutrient-use efficiency of sugracane (and other) crops. These products are intended to also increase the stable carbon content of highly weathered tropical soils, with benefits to crop yield through improved soil quality.

The project is supervised by Dr Henrique Franco and Dr. Saran Sohi.
