Biochar can directly modify both chemical and physical conditions in the soil on various timescales. These changes will impact soil biology and thus potentially impact plant growth indirectly as well as directly. This project seeks evidence for the response of soil fauna, mycorrhizal fungi and plant pathogens, in the specific context of UK arable agriculture and using winter and spring barley as a model.
